Cheap way to cheat bespoke joinery

A client wanted the look of a bespoke storage wall without the bespoke price. To achieve this, we built a softwood framework to support an IKEA Kallax bookcase sized 1820 x 1820mm (£165).

We lined up the plastered plasterboard finish with the front of the bookcase and painted the surround in an accent colour. Insert drawers and doors for this bookcase are plentiful and inexpensive and they provided a mix of hidden storage, useful drawers and areas for display.

This solution provided ample storage space on a tight budget, costing less than £800 in total.
